How to Choose a Wedding Photographer: It Is More Than the Photos

A couple of weeks ago, I came across a Reddit post asking a question I see all the time:

It sounds like a simple question, but choosing the right wedding photographer can feel overwhelming. There are SO many photographers out there, and when you read through the advice online, people usually talk about editing style, pricing, packages, experience, and portfolios.

All of those things matter.

But I think there is one HUGE part that couples sometimes forget.

You Are Inviting a Stranger Into One of the Most Personal Days of Your Life

Your wedding photographer is not just someone who shows up, takes pretty pictures, and leaves.

Think about how much time you will actually spend together.

Your photographer may be there while you are getting ready. They will meet your parents, grandparents, siblings, wedding party, and closest friends. They will be standing nearby during emotional conversations, nervous moments, huge hugs, happy tears, and everything else happening throughout the day.

For a documentary wedding photographer, being close to those moments is especially important. I need people to feel comfortable enough to forget about my camera and continue living the day.

That is why I always tell couples to get to know the person behind the photographs.

Look Beyond the Wedding Photography Portfolio

Yes, look through their portfolio.

Yes, make sure you LOVE their photography style.

Yes, ask about their experience and what is included in their wedding photography coverage.

But talk to them too.

Ask yourself:

Do I enjoy talking to this person?

Do I feel comfortable around them?

Can I imagine spending eight, ten, or twelve hours with them?

Would my family feel relaxed around them?

Do I trust them to be around during some of the most emotional moments of my wedding?

These questions matter, especially if you are looking for documentary wedding photography or a wedding photojournalist who will spend the day observing your relationships and capturing moments as they naturally happen.

If someone feels awkward, pushy, or uncomfortable during your consultation, that feeling probably will not suddenly disappear on your wedding day.

And when someone is going to be beside you for most of the day, their energy matters. A LOT.

Schedule a Call Before Choosing Your Wedding Photographer

This is why I encourage couples to schedule a consultation before booking a wedding photographer.

Not because I want to sell you.

I genuinely want you to find someone who is right for you, whether that photographer is me or someone else.

The best wedding photographer for you should create work you love, but they should also be someone you trust enough to invite into your world.

As a wedding photojournalist and documentary photographer, I believe that trust is a huge part of creating honest photographs. When you and the people around you feel comfortable, you can stay present and let the day happen without constantly thinking about the camera.

Your wedding photos matter.

But so does the person standing behind the camera. ❀️

Looking for a Documentary Wedding Photographer?

If you are searching for a Los Angeles documentary wedding photographer who cares about your people, your relationships, and how your wedding actually unfolds, I would love to get to know you.

Let’s talk about your wedding, your people, and what you want to remember years from now.

Northern San Diego Engagement Session | Bar Date and Sunset Beach Photography

β€œWe love spending our date nights trying new bars, so we figured this would be so us.” πŸ₯°

The moment Myrissa and Chad said that, I knew exactly how their engagement session should feel. Instead of planning a traditional photo shoot, we turned it into one of their favorite date nights. We started with cocktails at a cozy bar 🍸 and ended the evening watching the sunset along the beach in Northern San Diego. πŸŒ…

From the very beginning, everything felt easy and natural. Myrissa might out-emoji me, which honestly says a lot. πŸ˜‚β€οΈ Chad reaches for her without even thinking, and those little moments say so much about their relationship. They laugh easily, they have fun together, and they make every moment feel effortless.

As the evening unfolded, they clinked glasses, wandered along the shoreline, and soaked in the golden light. Their engagement session felt playful, flirty, nostalgic, and full of genuine connection. Those are always my favorite sessions because they reflect who a couple truly is instead of asking them to be anyone else.

I love when couples choose an engagement session that reflects who they really are. Instead of asking them to pose, I get to document them laughing, talking, and enjoying time together. Those are the moments that tell the story of their relationship and become the photos they treasure most.

One of the sweetest parts of the day was knowing they drove all the way to Northern San Diego just to spend the evening with us. They kept thanking us throughout the session, but honestly, Brett and I were the lucky ones. We left feeling like we had spent the evening with friends. πŸ’›

Chico Hot Springs Elopement in Pray, Montana

It poured rain all day, soaking everything and making you wonder if the sky would ever clear. But just as MacKenzie and Nate were about to get married, the clouds parted and two rainbows 🌈🌈 stretched across the sky.

Both of them have lost their mothers, and in that moment, it felt so clear. The rainbows were their moms, celebrating right alongside them. I had full body chills. I still have chills. I screamed. I was so touched. It was one of those moments that does not feel accidental.

And then, just like that, as soon as the ceremony ended, the sky closed back up and the heavy rain returned. The whole thing lasted only minutes. Fleeting. Extraordinary. Unforgettable. Like a whispered miracle meant only for them. Their day was magic in the purest form.

Their Chico Hot Springs elopement in Pray, Montana was so true to who they are. A quiet hike in the mountains. Vows spoken in their own words. Real moments that did not need staging to be beautiful. This is what made Montana mountain elopement so powerful. Nature leads, and love follows.

This is also the heart of documentary wedding photography. Telling the story exactly as it happened. Capturing what it felt like, not just what it looked like. So couples and their families can hold onto these moments forever.
