How to Choose a Wedding Photographer: It Is More Than the Photos

A couple of weeks ago, I came across a Reddit post asking a question I see all the time:

It sounds like a simple question, but choosing the right wedding photographer can feel overwhelming. There are SO many photographers out there, and when you read through the advice online, people usually talk about editing style, pricing, packages, experience, and portfolios.

All of those things matter.

But I think there is one HUGE part that couples sometimes forget.

You Are Inviting a Stranger Into One of the Most Personal Days of Your Life

Your wedding photographer is not just someone who shows up, takes pretty pictures, and leaves.

Think about how much time you will actually spend together.

Your photographer may be there while you are getting ready. They will meet your parents, grandparents, siblings, wedding party, and closest friends. They will be standing nearby during emotional conversations, nervous moments, huge hugs, happy tears, and everything else happening throughout the day.

For a documentary wedding photographer, being close to those moments is especially important. I need people to feel comfortable enough to forget about my camera and continue living the day.

That is why I always tell couples to get to know the person behind the photographs.

Look Beyond the Wedding Photography Portfolio

Yes, look through their portfolio.

Yes, make sure you LOVE their photography style.

Yes, ask about their experience and what is included in their wedding photography coverage.

But talk to them too.

Ask yourself:

Do I enjoy talking to this person?

Do I feel comfortable around them?

Can I imagine spending eight, ten, or twelve hours with them?

Would my family feel relaxed around them?

Do I trust them to be around during some of the most emotional moments of my wedding?

These questions matter, especially if you are looking for documentary wedding photography or a wedding photojournalist who will spend the day observing your relationships and capturing moments as they naturally happen.

If someone feels awkward, pushy, or uncomfortable during your consultation, that feeling probably will not suddenly disappear on your wedding day.

And when someone is going to be beside you for most of the day, their energy matters. A LOT.

Schedule a Call Before Choosing Your Wedding Photographer

This is why I encourage couples to schedule a consultation before booking a wedding photographer.

Not because I want to sell you.

I genuinely want you to find someone who is right for you, whether that photographer is me or someone else.

The best wedding photographer for you should create work you love, but they should also be someone you trust enough to invite into your world.

As a wedding photojournalist and documentary photographer, I believe that trust is a huge part of creating honest photographs. When you and the people around you feel comfortable, you can stay present and let the day happen without constantly thinking about the camera.

Your wedding photos matter.

But so does the person standing behind the camera. ❤️

Northern San Diego Engagement Session | Bar Date and Sunset Beach Photography

“We love spending our date nights trying new bars, so we figured this would be so us.” 🥰

The moment Myrissa and Chad said that, I knew exactly how their engagement session should feel. Instead of planning a traditional photo shoot, we turned it into one of their favorite date nights. We started with cocktails at a cozy bar 🍸 and ended the evening watching the sunset along the beach in Northern San Diego. 🌅

From the very beginning, everything felt easy and natural. Myrissa might out-emoji me, which honestly says a lot. 😂❤️ Chad reaches for her without even thinking, and those little moments say so much about their relationship. They laugh easily, they have fun together, and they make every moment feel effortless.

As the evening unfolded, they clinked glasses, wandered along the shoreline, and soaked in the golden light. Their engagement session felt playful, flirty, nostalgic, and full of genuine connection. Those are always my favorite sessions because they reflect who a couple truly is instead of asking them to be anyone else.

I love when couples choose an engagement session that reflects who they really are. Instead of asking them to pose, I get to document them laughing, talking, and enjoying time together. Those are the moments that tell the story of their relationship and become the photos they treasure most.

One of the sweetest parts of the day was knowing they drove all the way to Northern San Diego just to spend the evening with us. They kept thanking us throughout the session, but honestly, Brett and I were the lucky ones. We left feeling like we had spent the evening with friends. 💛

The Story Behind Our Best Documentary Wedding Photos | Annie Bang

Have you ever looked at a photo and thought, “How the heck did they even get that shot?”
Like the one where the groom is wiping away a tear as his bride walks down the aisle. Or the flower girl is mid-scream and someone in the background is losing it with laughter?

Yeah… those are our favorite moments too.

Let’s pull back the curtain on one of our favorite weddings and show you exactly how these kinds of real, raw, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moments happen. This is the behind-the-scenes of what it’s like working with a documentary wedding photographer - aka someone who’s basically a stealth ninja with a camera.

How the Best Documentary Photos Happened

We didn’t ask them to fake laugh. They were actually laughing. Why? Because we gave them space to be fully present, not perform. When you forget the camera’s there, magic happens.

They trusted us to be there - not hidden in the background, but fully present with them. That’s how we caught the hug between the bride and her grandma in the kitchen. No one else saw it, but we did because we were part of the moment, just with cameras in hand.

We don’t wait for things to happen. We feel when they’re about to. It’s instinct built over years. That tearful moment right before the vows? We were already there, dialed in, shutter ready.

4. Blending In Like a Guest (But With Better Shoes)

People tend to forget we’re there. Seriously. We dress like guests, we smile, we chat a bit, and then we fade into the background and let stories unfold. That’s the secret sauce of the best documentary photographer: invisibility.

Why This Matters to You

Weddings can be messy, beautiful, and totally unpredictable. And that’s where we thrive. These are your memories - not a Pinterest board checklist. When you work with a wedding photojournalist, you’re getting more than pretty pictures.

You’re getting the truth. In all its tender, hilarious, and chaotic glory.

Thinking of Skipping the Poses Too?

If you want wedding photos that feel like you, not a version of you playing a role - let’s talk. We’re not here to tell you where to stand or what to do with your hands all day long. We’re here to tell your story.

Unfiltered. Emotional. Real.

Because that’s what lasts forever.
