Some love stories really make you wonder how two people did not meet sooner.

They both grew up in the Tahoe area, skied, attended the same university, and eventually moved to San Diego for the ocean. They even had many mutual friends, but somehow their paths never fully crossed. It took a dating app to finally bring them together, and once they met, everything clicked.

Their shared love for adventure has been part of their relationship from the beginning, so celebrating their wedding at Leo Carrillo Ranch in Carlsbad, California, was such a beautiful way to begin their next chapter.

And of course, Stirling the Corgi deserves an honorable mention. 💛 Having him there made their celebration even more personal and gave us some pretty adorable moments to document.

Olivia and Morgan’s Colorful Wedding at The Garland

As a wedding photojournalist, you get a front row seat to some of the most intimate moments in people’s lives. The vows. The reunions. The big belly laughs. The quiet little tears. You feel everything. And you get to hold it with your camera.

Olivia and Morgan’s wedding at The Garland in Los Angeles was one of those days that fills you up in the best way. A whirlwind of joy and color. A full celebration of culture, family, and pure, unfiltered fun. It was the kind of wedding that reminds you again and again why documentary wedding photography matters.

There were surprises at every turn. Chinese lion dancers burst into the reception with pounding drums that shook the whole room. Everyone cheered and jumped in. The energy was unreal. Then the mood shifted into something soft and emotional. Olivia’s mom stepped up to the mic and started singing a Chinese song, Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin. Olivia and her dad danced slowly to her voice. It was tender and full of heart.

Her sisters told me that Olivia is the one who made their dad open up. She is the one who gently cracked him open and made him say things he had never said before. Things like “I love you.” I was honestly choked up behind my camera, thinking of my own Asian dad and how awkward we can be together sometimes. It hit me right in the chest.

This is the gift of documentary wedding photography in Los Angeles. We are both an observer and a silent participant. We get swept up in the drums, the dancing, the laughter, and the tears. And you know, when we click the shutter, that we are not just taking a photo. We are saving the feeling of being there. Wildly joyful. Completely unguarded. Full of truth and heart.

Bel Air Country Club Wedding Los Angeles Photoshoot - Sierra + Alan

One day, I got an email from Sierra, "We want a wedding photographer that won't do all the usual things (a million posed pictures or any for that matter or pictures of expensive shoes etc.). We would love to have you just capture everything as it actually happened so we can look back and laugh and remember what it was like, not how hot we are (b/c WE KNOW jk jk ;)" My heart literally started beating so fast because I was that excited. Because... you know, it's harder than you think - meeting like-minded people/friends in life. That's what I felt with Sierra and Alan from the start - from that email. Sierra was finishing up school in London when she met Alan, who is a talented film director, working with other fellow brilliant filmmakers such as Wes Anderson, and they were moving to LA, where Sierra grew up. (Oh, and it turns out, this amazing London-based documentary wedding photographer Lyndsey Goddard had already photographed their UK wedding and helped the couple find me for their California Bel Air Bay Club Wedding photoshoot. Yayyyy, thanks Lyndsey!)

Truly though, in all my experience as a wedding photographer in CA, Sierra and Alan are the two nicest and most genuine people I've ever met, and I admire how they enjoy life and appreciate the true meaning of being in the moment. It was probably my first event where a giant sign at the entrance to the wedding ceremony read, "There's a LOVELY LADY with an IMPRESSIVE camera out there SOMEWHERE. So tuck your camera and smartphone away and RELAX." It was pretty amazing to see how a group of 200 people already knew what was important in life - living in the present, because, you know.. even with that sign, there would be at least one single person who still pulls his/her mobile phone out. But no, not here. It was simply beautiful to feel and document the love their friends and family were pouring on them all day and all night; in the heart of the beautiful Pacific Palisades at The Bel Air Bay Club.
